چکیده
This paper aims to analyse evidence, based on one of the largest and most representative samples households previously flooded or living with flood risk date, social patterns in a range resilience traits relating preparedness prior (e.g., property adaptations, contents insurance, etc.) mitigations enacted during immediately following receiving warning, evacuation into temporary accommodation, etc.). The data were collected from 2006 survey 1223 variety locations across Scotland between twelve years after major local floods. Our analysis identifies remarkably few differences mitigation measures, although some aspects demography, housing length residence an area, as well personal history, are important. In light this finding, we argue that vulnerability flooding arise deep-seated socio-economic socio-spatial inequalities affect exposure ability recover impacts. engrained, but well-meaning, assumption management impoverished communities lacking deficient knowledge capabilities is somewhat pejorative misses fundamental, yet sometimes invisible, stratifications play out subtle powerful ways households’ communities’ avoid We general poverty inequality alleviation such tax welfare policy urban community regeneration schemes, likely be as, if not more, important alleviating long-term impacts floods than targeting policy.

Private Flood Mitigation Measures in a Changing Risk Environment
In Europe, water management is moving from flood defence to a risk management approach, which takes both the probability and the potential consequences of flooding into account. It is expected that climate change and socio-economic development will lead to an increase in flood risk in the Rhine basin. To optimize spatial planning and flood management measures, studies are needed that quantify f...
متن کاملOptimal Flood Mitigation over Flood Propagation Approximations
Globally, flooding is the most frequent among all natural disasters, commonly resulting in damage to infrastructure, economic catastrophe, and loss of life. Since the flow of water is influenced by the shape and height of topography, an effective mechanism for preventing and directing floods is to use structures that increase height, e.g., levees and sandbags. In this paper, we introduce the Op...
متن کاملFlood Characteristics and Mitigation Issues
Among various natural disasters floods make the largest impact in terms of number of casualties, people affected and property lost. Flood data during the past 30 years show that flood events that cause significant impacts have increased at a steady rate. Available data suggest that this increase could be attributed to increasing population and exposure, increasing property values located in vul...
متن کاملRisk Analysis for Flood Mitigation on the Raritan
We have developed a framework for flood mitigation risk analysis that applies generally to floods, and have applied it in this study of flood mitigation risk analysis for the Raritan Basin in New Jersey, USA. The framework we have developed involves a conceptual model of the relation among meteorological activity, hydrological models, infrastructure intervention, fine-grained topography, and ec...
